Learning Centred Leadership for aspiring special school senior leaders

Andrew Buckton (CEO Enable Trust) and Neil Galloway (Former Headteacher of Kingsweston School and freelance Special Education Consultant) have run a successful south west regional ‘Learning Centred Leadership’ (LCL) course for new Heads in Learning Difficulty & Disability (LDD) schools in 2018-19. This has developed a regional interest in further training for senior leaders in regional LDD schools.

The 2019-20 Learning Centred Leadership programme will focus on developing senior leadership within LDD schools. The programme is made up of a half day initial meeting followed by 6 full days of training spread over the academic year. The course dates are:

Day 1 - Friday 4th October 2019

Day 2 - Friday 29th November 2019

Day 3 - Friday 24th January 2020

Day 4 - Friday 13th March 2020

Day 5 - Friday 1st May 2020

Day 6 - Friday 26th June 2020

The course covers the following themes:

• Vision, Values, Culture and Strategy, including the roles of different school leaders in relation to these.

• Relationships, including making and sustaining positive relationships, participating in difficult conversations and a focus upon wellbeing within your organisation.

• Pedagogy and Curriculum, reflecting upon best practice and strategies that nurture this.

• Operational Effectiveness, including inspiring, influencing and motivating others and managing under performance.

• Accountabilities, of the school and of the different role holders within it.

• Holistic Pupil Outcomes.

Within the framework offered above there is scope to develop an emphasis to meet the priorities of the participants. This emphasis will be agreed at the initial half day meeting. Collaborative problem solving is a theme which runs throughout the programme.

The training model:

  • Provides senior and middle leaders with a network of support and a ‘safe space’ for exploring the specifics and the generalities of leadership.

  • Provides a strong focus upon key areas of functionality and accountability underpinned by an explicit framework of school specific values.

  • Is predicated upon active engagement, participation and sharing.

  • Enhances networking and learning by rotating sessions between participating schools.

The venue for Day 1 will be New Siblands School. Further venues will be determined on the first day.
