Strategies for improving spelling 02.12.19

A session for class teachers, NQTs and teaching assistants.

Developing spelling skills in children can often be a challenge.
This session will give practical strategies that can be used in the classroom to develop skills, raise expectations and encourage independence for spelling.

Led by an LLE head teacher and experienced literacy leader, the afternoon will cover:

  • Spelling strategies at the point of writing.
  • Spelling strategies after writing.
  • Strategies for learning words.
  • Spelling tests/assessments.

Maximising the impact of teaching assistants has been a focus since the DISS report in 2009 which found a negative relationship between the amount of TA support and progress made by children.

This session will highlight the strategies that are now recognised as good practice in particular the roles and deployment of TA in a mainstream classroom.
